Astrophysical significance of the anisotropic kinetic alpha effect

چکیده
The generation of large scale flows by the anisotropic kinetic alpha (AKA) effect is investigated in simulations with a suitable time-dependent spaceand time-periodic anisotropic forcing lacking parity invariance. The forcing pattern moves relative to the fluid, which leads to a breaking of the Galilean invariance as required for the AKA effect to exist. The AKA effect is found to produce a clear large scale flow pattern when the Reynolds number, R, is small as only a few modes are excited in linear theory. In this case the non-vanishing components of the AKA tensor are dynamically independent of the Reynolds number. For larger values of R, many more modes are excited and the components of the AKA tensor are found to decrease rapidly with increasing value of R. However, once there is a magnetic field (imposed and of sufficient strength, or dynamo-generated and saturated) the field begins to suppress the AKA effect, regardless of the value of R. It is argued that the AKA effect is unlikely to be astrophysically significant unless the magnetic field is weak and R is small.

Astrophysical Gyrokinetics: Basic Equations and Linear Theory
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is encountered in a wide variety of astrophysical plasmas, including accretion disks, the solar wind, and the interstellar and intracluster medium. On small scales, this turbulence is often expected to consist of highly anisotropic fluctuations with frequencies small compared to the ion cyclotron frequency. For a number of applications, the small scales are ...
متن کاملAstrophysical magnetic fields and nonlinear dynamo theory
The current understanding of astrophysical magnetic fields is reviewed with particular emphasis on nonlinear dynamo theory. Analytic and numerical results are discussed both for small scale dynamos, where helicity is unimportant, and for large scale dynamos, where kinetic helicity is crucial. Large scale dynamos produce small scale magnetic helicity as a waste product that quenches the large sc...

متن کاملWeak turbulence of anisotropic shear-Alfvén waves
We review recent results obtained in [14] on weak turbulence of shear-Alfvén waves in the limit of strongly anisotropic pulsations that are elongated along a strong external magnetic field. The kinetic equation for energy is presented at the level of three-wave interactions. It is in agreement with the Galtier et al. [13] formulation of the full three–dimensional helical case when taking the pr...
متن کاملImplicit large eddy simulations of anisotropic weakly compressible turbulence with application to core-collapse supernovae
In the implicit large eddy simulation (ILES) paradigm, the dissipative nature of high-resolution shock-capturing schemes is exploited to provide an implicit model of turbulence. The ILES approach has been applied to different contexts, with varying degrees of success. It is the de-facto standard in many astrophysical simulations and in particular in studies of core-collapse supernovae (CCSN). R...
